Business Book Recommendations for the Last Days of Summer

We’ve got a couple weeks of summer left…

Enough time for a few dips in the “adult” pool (aka the hot tub), a summer cocktail or two (my favorite, Malibu and Diet… don’t judge) and a few more books for the summer reading list.

Or, if you are like me, books for your “Listen-To list.”

I listen to audiobooks and podcasts when I am kids-free in the car – and sometimes even when they are there with one earbud on them and one on an audiobook. I listen when I go for my more-walk-than-run each evening and when I am doing mindless tasks around the house. I can usually get about one in each week, listening at 1.5x speed.

I’ve got a few of my favorites below as well as a special gift for you…

I’ve partnered with Audible to give you 30 days of free listening and any two books free! Just visit to get your free month.

Note: all of these are Author-narrated. Those are my favorite books to listen to as you get their full inflection and often a few asides throughout.

Great story telling and a framework for making your products, programs, or services become a guide to your customer, the hero.

This book was a game changer for me and everyone I have recommended it to. It changes the way you manage money in your business to make more of it without taking any of the “fun” out. The author, Mike Michalowicz – who happens to be a friend and client from my agency – reads the book and is hysterical.

This book was written by an ER Doctor who studied mistakes physicians made that caused harm to patients. He discovered that seasoned and talented physicians would often skip steps. When they instituted a checklist system, these mistakes were all but eliminated. Sounds kind of boring, but his examples and blueprints for applying to business gave me multiple “ahas.”

Another great book by Michalowicz, this one provides a plan to grow your business in the most profitable way possible – getting more of your best customers, clients, or patients.

Truth-telling… I like to mix up pure business books with a bit of fun/trash reads. Another truth – I love Real Housewives. Andy Cohen, the producer behind many shows on BRAVO has a series of three books, reading his diaries. He name-drops like a champ and is very funny. Plus, there are a few lessons to be learned… what an audience responds to and what can get you in hot water.

Building a Story Brand is an epic book. I purchased the hard and audible versions and later invested in the program.

Thanks Kim. I am personally not a fan of Storybrand. It is simply a repackaged version of marketing positioning with an inflated price tag for a self proclaimed expert who uses the platform for his own gain

I love Chip and Dan Heath’s books “Made to Stick” and “Switch”. They are insightful and actionable while also being very entertaining.

“The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg is also a really good one. It helped me understand myself better.

Okay, one more: “The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks. A great book recommendation from my wife. I just finished it, and it was an eye opener to the self-sabotaging habits I have and the potential benefits I’ll enjoy by dropping those lousy habits! Definitely worth a read.

My favorite business read right now is Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss.
